From the author of SILK ROAD comes this 'over easy' kind of read that did not have the author's usual kick. The book was somewhat predictable, which is not the author's style. The storyline was that Liberty Levine was not who she thought she was. She was not who her mother thought she was either. For thirty years these two were needlessly in the dark about their identities. I liked the everydayness of how Jews migrated to America in the early twentieth century and how they were assimilated into the existing, melting pot population. As always, this author can spin a tale entrenched in history.Thank you, Mr. Falconer, for a good read.
I have been a fan of historical fiction all of my life. Mr. Falconer did an admirable job in his research of WW I, The 1929 crash of the stock market, the Depression and WW II. Very believable characters: Libby - my favorite, full of grit, spunk and determination; Sura (not-so-much Sarah, until the final chapters); Etta; Dewey; and Jack. The character development was exceptional. I hope I am not disappointed when I choose another Falconer nove!. WELL DONE!
This is the best, most captivating book I've read in a long time! From the time I woke up until I went to bed, it held my attention.I would recommend this to anyone who wants to curl up and get lost in a great book.
This is one of the best books of historical fiction I have read in a long time. From Russia to New York, from WWI to WWII, I was captivated throughout. So excited to have discovered this author!
A bit simplistic. A story that could only be called true fiction, given how unlikely a majority of the events could have happened.

Loving Liberty Levine by Colin Falconer is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early February.Sura’s husband Micha travels to the US from Russia, but, when she arrives to join him, he’s raising a seemingly orphan infant whose mother died in a fire and a father in the Boston mob, trying to find her whereabouts. Sura brightens their life there with dreams for the future and for the baby, who she names Liberty and raises as her own. I adored the matter of fact, just-the-way-it-is dialogue sprinkled with Hebrew and Yiddish and saw parallels of this being a cheerful version of the main plot for The Jungle where the male character struggles to provide for his family, but Micha in New York, instead of Chicago. The stress of lying about Liberty surviving the fire wears at Micha, so he drafts himself into WWI. Sura, now Sarah, a widow after Micha’s death by sniper, learns of Liberty’s birth father searching for her, then lands and marries a finance broker named Bill Dewey in the eve of the Great Depression, who seems to have upper-crust connections in Boston….
