Full of fun recipes and includes a "how to host" section on how to choose cheeses, beer, and wine. An appropriate guide not only to appetizers but also entertaining. Between The Kitchn cookbook and this one there are a lot of fun recipes and ideas to help host an outstanding party. Another user mentioned that there are a lot of last minute things to do--each recipe comes with a 'make ahead' sidebar outlining the prep you can do beforehand. Further being in the kitchen a little during the early stage of the party is perfectly acceptable and I find it part of the spectacle of the party.
I occasionally host dinner parties for 30+ guests. I love "Cook's Science" and was hoping this book would be equally informative and also add a little pizzaz to the conventional appetizer quiver. Unfortunately, the recipes in this book either tend toward the unexciting and ordinary, or they are demanding and need to be cooked immediately before presenting -- a challenge with guests milling around. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a cookbook that strikes the appropriate balance between the two.
I hosted my first Cookie Exchange for the holidays and wanted to serve appetizers for the event. This book was perfect! Not only were the recipes excellent (what else would you expect from Cook's Illustrated), but the book contains great guidance on how many appetizers to serve, which appetizers to pair together, sample menus of appetizers, etc. If you are looking for help with how to do appetizers right, this is the go-to book!
There is nothing very special about the types of most appetizers in the book, although I found some nice, different ones. What is good is the "how to" part. Easy to follow directions and explanations.
I bought this as a gift for my mother, as I haven't lived at home in 10+ years and miss her home cooking.I wanted to give her something she could use and pick out her favorite appetizers to bring to larger family functions so that I experience her cooking more often and this seemed like a great choice. She was so excited over it she wanted to immediately look through it while we were at dinner!It seems very well made and the recipes look great.
Great well explained recipes that we've come to expect from Cook's Illustrated. Love that they added a to make ahead feature to many of the recipes - a big help for party planning.
Love all the recipes for those event evenings when you'd like to bring something new.
Great pictures and a bunch of good recipes. Some easy, some more time consuming. We used some of these at our annual holiday party.
