Review

“A cross between The Boys on the Bus and Miss Lonelyhearts” (New York Review of Books)“By the end of ‘Unbelievable’ it’s clear how wrong they all were in thinking they could run over “little Katy” (Trump’s snide name for Tur.) This book couldn’t be more timely, appearing as President Trump ratchets up his attacks on the news media….The more personal story Tur tells in “Unbelievable” is also compelling….One more subject that Tur richly examines is the outrageous sexism of Trump and many of his supporters.” (Jill Abramson, New York Times Book Review)“A quick and enjoyable read. . . .  The chapters switch between key points in the campaign and Election Day, enhancing the feel of chaos that must have been a big part of covering the Trump campaign.” (Associated Press)“A must-ride roller coaster of a memoir. . . Unbelievable is best read as a reminder that it really did happen that way, we aren’t all crazy, it was that crazy.” (Hugh Hewitt, Washington Post)“A real page-tuner” (Morning Joe)“Tur’s brisk behind-the-scenes account humanizes the press corps, illuminates life on the campaign trail, and delivers on its promise: “I won’t pretend to explain it,” Tur writes, but “I will tell you what I saw.” (Publishers Weekly)“A great behind-the-scenes look about what it takes to have been a campaign correspondent. All presidents, all presidential candidates have had hostile relationships with the press from time to time. This current president has a totally different reaction to the press and a totally different take on press freedom than any president that has ever gone before him. And the person who most personifies his hostility, condescension and aggression toward the press is NBC correspondent Katy Tur.” (Rachel Maddow, The Rachel Maddow Show)“Outstanding” (Jon Favreau, Pod Save America )“One of the most insightful books I’ve ever read.” (Trevor Noah, The Daily Show )“A fascinating play-by-play of what it was like to cover a campaign that was far from ordinary.” (New York Post)

From the Back Cover

No one saw it coming— except the NBC journalist who covered (and took fire from) Donald Trump on the 2016 campaign trail. Unbelievable is that award-winning journalist’s inside account of the most shocking presidential election in American history. Tur tells the story of how America sent a former reality show host to the White House—a story that is darkly comic, bizarre, and often scary. She reveals what it was like to be there as it happened, from day 1 to day 500, inside a no-rules world where she was spat on, demeaned, and discredited. Through all the long nights, wild scoops, naked chauvinism, dodgy staffers, and fevered debates to election night November 8, 2016, no one had a better view than Tur. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was unbelievable in 2016; it is now American history.

Liked this (even if I knew going in that the finale would depress me). Every time she talked about the deplorable (yeah, I said it) behavior by some attending the Trump rallies, my blood pressure went up. Where were these horrible humans raised? Mostly, you get a sense of how exhausting it was to cover the Trump campaign, particularly for a rising young journalist whose entire career was thrust into a highly-visible overdrive by the unpredictable campaign. I wish there had been more mind-blowing inside stories -- the stuff we never saw or knew about. Mostly, it's a pretty predictable telling of events we all experienced from one unique perspective -- almost a journalist's work journal. No OMG stories that would have made this a more titillating read. You have to remember -- this is an active journalist who wasn't about to embarrass any of her then (and current) sources. My favorite part of the book was learning of her childhood with gonzo journalist parents. A full book about that would probably have been more exciting.

I actually really enjoyed this book. From how it was written to the stories and details she added. It was a nice perspective to see. I honestly don’t know much about Tur or her journalsmis, but I like how she continued to say that it was her responsibility to be objective and to ask the tough questions. Even though I like Trump much more than Clinton I hope she was sincere in that pursuit and not doing it because of personal bias. From her writing you can tell that she is no fan of Don. I do wish she gave a little more credit to him and the campaign that he was running but I understand where she is coming from and why she did not after hearing her side. It was unfortunate to hear about how some supporters treated her. I think it’s also a valuable lesson that shows, how people felt Washington, D.C. had left them behind and their interests.Overall, I give the book 4 stars just because Tur seemed a little too jaded by Trump vs objective and open minded. If you are to the left you’ll love this book. If you are to the right you’ll appreciate a different perspective that is unique, fresh and captivating to read about. I couldn’t put the book down!

Ms Tur did a great job of writing this book, but--I wish she had not skipped around so much and had followed the timeline of the Trump campaign through to and including the night of the election. As much as the author followed the Trump campaign, I was hoping she would give readers more insight as to what happened at campaign stops, (how did Trump treat those he worked with, was he easy or hard to get along with, I.e., demanding? What was Trump's reaction election night when he got elected? We, the public, see so many sides to this person who is now our president, that I was honestly hoping to learn more about the real Donald Trump. But, I guess what we see now is what we get! Book aside, I think you are a great reporter Katy Tur, and admire what you went through to be able to write this book!

Katy Tur is the NBC correspondent who covered Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. In that position she endured his continued abuse as well as the abuse of his followers. Early in the campaign in New Hampshire, Trump booms out: “’Katy hasn’t even looked once at me.’” Another time he says to her: “’Be quiet.’” In one rally he opines that “she’s back there, little Katy.’” Then he calls her a liar and a ‘”third-rate reporter [three times in case anyone missed his harangue].’” He calls into Fox & Friends and says that Katy Tur “’knows nothing about my campaign . . . she’s a, you know, not a very good reporter.’” And Trump even gives Tur an unwanted big kiss on her cheek on one occasion.Trump’s protestors are just as bad, calling her a c—t, and going after her family and threatening her. One man actually spits in her face. She finally gets private security for all the rallies as they get rowdier.Mr. Tur, however, in her book UNBELIEVABLE gets the last word but certainly not the last laugh. She also says in her Prologue that she hired a fact-checker, went through volumes of documents, e-mails, and videos and checked her memory with other reporters to insure that her book is accurate. The result is a well-developed and unbiased-as-possible account of what she saw throughout the Trump candidacy and ultimate victory party on election night. This writer, who by the way, has a great sense of humor, also includes information about her parents, a lost boyfriend, a potential new boyfriend and her own feelings and fears as she zig-zags across the U. S. following Trump.I was not aware that Ms. Tur predicted that Trump would win the presidency a few days before the election. She arrived at this conclusion in part from seeing the people who attended the Trump rallies and how he inflamed them. (A day before the election at a rally a man yells out something that Ms. Tur will not forget: “’Assassinate the b-t-h.’”)Finally here is her quotation about Trump’s winning: “To actually watch Trump’s miracle come in is a shock like missing the last stair or sugaring your coffee with what proves to be salt. It’s not just an intellectual experience. The whole body responds.”For me and most of the people I hold dear, Trump's victory was a full-body slam.

I can't put this down and had to write a 5-star revuew before I was done, because I wanted to counter all the trolls who clearly haven't read it and are just trashing the author. Who's a no. 1 Amazon best seller in several categories anyway. Tur has always struck me as smart and insightful, but her sense of humor doesn't get much play on TV. Here it leavens the horror show of the Trump campaign which she is somewhat reluctantly drawn into covering when she has a good job in London and a charming boyfriend in Paris. But are they enough to satisfy her hopes for her career? No, and the fateful choice launches her on an an amazing adventure which she captures with biting wit moment-by-moment. I've read lots (probably too much) coverage of the campaign, but nothing quite like this. She kept great notes, did her research, and draws you along moment-by-moment into the Alice in Wonderland world she became trapped in. Wonderful writing.
