Wasn’t sure what to make of the book but it was captivating and kept me tuned in. It’s like a stream of different stories linked together by a common theme. Definitely worth reading and highly recommended. The chapters are different stories about what could be real people navigating complex and traumatizing experiences. Some succeed and find hope, others fail and give up. The last chapter: the thing around your neck is by far my favorite. You can say it’s a companion to Achebe’s “things fall apartâ€. Above all, this is an easy read and the characters were believable and relatable. How Adichie finds the words and web of narrative imagery is beautiful. Although the abrupt end makes your craving for more.
Excellent short stories. Gives insight into the perceptions that outsiders may have about living in America, and the realization that the grass is not always greener on the other side; there are always trade-offs. The author highlights complex factors taken into account that women in difficult situations are faced with, when making decisions between preserving their dignity vs maintaining their livelihood.
I recently saw a TED Talks address by the author which led me to purchase this first book. This was both a joy and a pain to read. A joy because it brought stories of a way of life and culture we know so little of as black people in my Caribbean country. I suppose we hear of Africa what the rest of the world does. It was also a pain because in these stories is also a reality of how much we take for granted that our culture and customs and history should be told and preserved and passed on to generations. Somehow we've been taught to believe our stories are not interesting enough unless told through a certain perspective that mimics what's already out there. This is my first but won't be my last read by this author. Thank you for telling stories so wonderfully and purposefully.
I love this book. Chimamanda Adichie is an amazing author and talented story teller, she's by far my favorite writer. The characters are all complex and interesting, and her stories are very powerful. A few might make you shed a tear or two. I've lent this out to a handful of my friends and they really enjoyed it too.
Took a while to finish this as so much was going on the first half of the year, but Adichie delivers again. I can anticipate Americanah in the reading of this book. I most enjoyed the short story about how Africans perceive one another during a writing retreat in Africa. You can sense Adichie sorting through her own life in that story and others. Way to go.
Adichie can tell a long story (Americah) but she can also tighten it up and produce stories that are concentrates. Each story in this collection is the length it needs to be. Some are vignettes with closure; others are a "story" that takes some time to tell. The writing is flawless. Characters are developed exactly to the extent they need to be. "Supporting characters" are not flat but rather are interesting in their own right (though, appropriately, not as fully developed). The stories written in the second person place you right in the heart of the character because "you" are in pain or are conflicted/happy/resolved.What I will be looking for next from Adichie is venturing into new ground. She has insightfully explored the experience of cultural hyphenation. Now, perhaps she can share with us stories of people who are wholly rooted in one culture. And perhaps it is that culture which forms a tragic story... or one of hope or positive resolution.
I was hesitant to read this book because I normally don't like short stories. I always felt like short stories didn't have enough character or story development. This book is different. The author manages to write characters and a story with considerable depth. I found myself wishing that each story was longer because I felt so connected to the characters' storylines.
Having now read every single one of Adichie's books, this book of short stories does feel incredibly similar to her other works. She sticks to Nigerians in Nigeria or America, professors in Nsukka and students at Penne state as usual. But her writing is, as always, spectacular. Moving, shocking, witty and familiar, her work is still a pleasure to read and if you've not read anything of hers before, id say this collection is a good introduction to her style.
