Mastering Java: An Effective Project-Based Approach… is a definite plus to my programming library. For an introduction to Java computer programming, this is very structured and well written. The book has 7 intense chapters, including one that features specific focus questions that are quite exhaustive. The introduction offers to teach the reader all that is needed to learn the Java computer programming language. The implication therefore is that, after using this book in its entirety, the average Joe should move from being a beginner programmer to the advanced level.That being said, the book dives right into the traditional background and introductory text that I have come to expect from a book that introduces a language or established framework. The first chapter of Mastering Java deftly lays the foundational basics of the Java language in order to for the user to create, write and read Java language, as you begin to learn programming. As to be expected, the next chapter flows logically into understanding the structure of data and algorithms as they merge together flawlessly. I particularly favored the 3rd chapter, which addressed Java web development, mainly because I have been excited and curious about developing web app and it was very interactive. This was a great decision of style, because of variances with how individuals learn. I’m very hands on and grasp information much more quickly by practicing what has been learned. I found chapter 4 to be a bit more challenging due to the complex nature of Java GUI programming. Thankfully the included tutorial was very precise in the guidelines to debug and edit.All in all, I’m a much more informed programmer for having used this study guide and highly recommend it for new programmers and experienced programmers who may need points of reference.

I got the book, Mastering Java: An Effective Project-Based Approach by Michael B. White, in order to get a basic understanding of programming with Java. I have been hesitant to approach the subject because I am not a savvy coder or developer. I was looking for an introduction and overview of the Java landscape.Mastering Java served my purpose well. The author goes into detail that is beyond my comprehension, but I am eager to learn. I tend to learn better through the written word and my own trial and error, which is exactly what White intends for the text.My favorite section was chapter three which deals with building Java applications for the web. White writes well for the beginners, like me. The book enlightened me about the necessity of using NetBeans, which is a total gamechanger. I had no idea that there were so many developers tools for helping write in Java.Through the first two chapters, White walks you through a step-by-step guide to getting set up with Java and creating your first Java program. All of the introductions on the source code, commenting, and variables are easy to follow. Especially, the section on the IF statement in coding is very clear and helpful.By the end of the first half, I was able to conceive of how to go about building my Java program. Admittedly, some of the later information goes beyond my applicability, but I look forward to continuing to use the book in my Java coding development. Mastering Java is a great developer guide for beginners, and also has plenty of good advice for experts.

A lot of the Java books (at least the ones I got) are more like pamphlets. Like just a few dozen pages with the occasional meaty one that has close to a hundred.But this Java book is truly worthy of the "Mastering" title with more than 600 pages! And the best part is, the entire part of the first chapter is more suitable for beginners than the short Java books I read in the past. Really good stuff and a lot of code samples to play around with. Things get advanced pretty quick but the journey is very slow and thorough!

I have decades of programming experience, primarily with C/C++. I've been doing some Android NDK programming recently, and wanted to get more familiar with the SDK Java language. I came across this book and its plentiful 5-star reviews and thought I'd give it a try. However, I'm not impressed. It's clear that this book has received light editing and is formatted primarily for eReaders. The copyright page on page 2 starts off with the following paragraph:"This book is geared towards providing precise and reliable information, with regard to the topic of cryptocurrency and its related topics. This publication is sold with the idea that that the publisher is not required to render any accounting, officially or otherwise, or any other qualified services. If further advice is necessary, contacting a legal and/or financial professional is recommended."What?It's clear that this book is a self-published effort. It reads more like a mishmash of thoughts and observations about the Java programming language, with random programming topics thrown in. The first chapter "Java Basics" is clearly targeted to beginning programmers, with basic expositions on arrays, for/while/do loops, if/else statements, etc. There are plenty of code examples but they're all very basic, and they're all printed triple-spaced (ie two blank lines between each statement line) which wastes a lot of space and makes them hard to read. Following this very basic first chapter comes Chapter 2, "Java Data Structures and Algorithms". Now the text jumps to what appears to be a summary of a Computer Science textbook on algorithms, spending pages on the "space complexity" and "asymptotic analysis" of algorithms, and throwing in a few paragraphs on Omega and Theta notation and Big O analysis. It then shows some very basic examples of linked lists, stacks and queues, most of them shown in pseudo-code without any Java implementation. The final four chapters are "Java Web Development", "Java GUI Programming", "Object-Oriented Programming" and "Java Interview Questions". Last is a glossary, with entries such as "Toggle - Toggling allows us to alternate between a pair of values, ie. 1 and 0, true and false, etc". and "Software - These are programs that are written specifically to run on computer systems". Really?What I cannot forgive is the lack of an index. None. Nada. Look, if you're going to self-publish, at least learn to use indexing tools. (Better yet, use a professional typesetting system like LaTeX.) A book this size without an index makes it almost unusable as a reference.I gave this book two stars because it does provide enough information on Swing, AWT, NetBeans and the like to at least know the terminology I need to use to find additional information online. I'm very suspicious of the 5-star reviews, as they cluster around roughly the same time period in December 2018, and a number of those reviewers also review the same cookbook. I'd recommend looking for a professionally published book if you're looking to learn Java programming.
