Here's what the book accomplishes:A brief History of Manny KoppA brief history of the production of fabricSamples of fabricI wasn't very impressed with:-The size of most of the samples of fabric. Many of the pictures are very small and difficult to see well. I realize that a lot of swatches are salesman samples, so you don't get a feel for the whole pattern. But I still think each one could have been pictured a little larger and not so close up. My main interest was in looking at different patterns for design inspiration. Also, the are various color ways, so that limits the actual number of fabric patterns shown.-The quality of the book is "ok". I bought mine used and the pages were coming loose from the spine (not an issue if buying new).-I wish it were a little thicker with more pictures.-The organization of fabrics is "ok". The majority of the fabrics are in the section called "calico", here meaning they were printed on cotton. It would have been more helpful to see them organized by date. Also, most of the dates are vague like 1900-1925. A good part of the fabrics included are from around 1900.Overall, I'm glad I purchased this book. It was interesting to read and look at. I did get some ideas for designing fabric. So it was useful. I would recommend this to others.
After reading the previous reviews, I was hesitant about ordering this book. I'm pleased that I overcame my hesitation, as I have found this book to be a wonderful aid in helping me to identify and date fabrics in my collection. The book is exactly what it claims to be----a collection of fabrics. Page after page of fabric swatches shown in full color. Most salesmen's samples from the late Victorian through the Edwardian eras. Definitely eye-candy for the textile enthusiast!
I have the book and was purchasing it for a fellow Appraiser who is newly Certified. Tese are great tools for our work.
Fabulous book of vintage and antique fabrics. Over 130 pages of color swatches. It is an excellent resource to help identify the age of vintage quilts. Well worth the money. Highly recommended.
I have been in the textile industry going on 30 years now, and I bought this book in hopes of, perhaps, learning about the creation of certain fabrics and their application within several industries. After reading through a mini-biography of the owner of the fabrics (who evidently was "somebody" in the industry but who I never heard of), I saw photos of different types of fabric with no analysis or application information attached. I have to agree with the earlier reviewer who states that it appears that this is nothing more than a collection of fabrics that perhaps were gathered up and photographed to create a publishable book. It's certainly not large enough to be considered a pretty "table" book, and it doesn't contain much in the way of technical information. Given the opportunity to go back in time, I would pass on this one in favor of the more popular and well-known publishers on textiles.
Fantastically helpful book in dating fabrics! It features many designs and colors from the very early 1900s that are seldom shown elsewhere. Calico Man is a title I reach for again and again and has proven to be a valuable research aid.
I ordered this book from Amazon thinking it would give me some history and insight into the creation and development of the fabrics. It's nothing more than photographs of some material he probably had laying around for fifty years.
