I was really excited to pick this up after scouring the author’s website which has lots of good (albeit less than ideally organized) information and q&a. Unfortunately this book is more of a general introduction to earthbag building and omits many important specifications. I’d still highly recommend Kaki Hunter’s Earthbag Building as the best guide on the market to earthbag architecture because of its accessible writing, many good photos, comprehensiveness, and detail.
The title is correct. This is the essential information about earthbag construction. But it is much more than that. With years of working in the earthbag construction field, teaching the subject, and writing about it, author Kelly Hart has a deep love and knowledge for his subject. So he goes beyond the essentials, with detailed commentary about foundations, plastering the walls, floor and roof options, incorporating utilities, and other uses for earthbags, such as retaining walls, cisterns, dams, even sculpture and art. The book is about 120 pages, including an excellent 8-page full color section (not 144 pages, as stated in Amazon’s description), but it is an oversized 8.5-inch by 11-inch two-column format, and has as much information as you would find in a smaller sized book of 180 pages, so it’s good bang for your buck. Finally, Hart’s writing is clear and concise and written from the vantage point of his personal experience. All in all, this is the book that will grace your first earhbag construction project.
A very valuable book containing up-to-date information, and it's well written. I am one of those people that never stops collecting books, especially those that inform me about how to feed, cloth, or shelter myself in a sustainable natural manner. I own a lot of great books about earthen building, and "Essential Earthbag Construction" is one of my favorites. At just over 110 pages, it's absolutely packed with the most important information for any D.I.Y. earthbag builder. Plus, it has great photos of some excellent earthen buildings. You'll want to show this book to your friends.
