Maria Hill sends her Aaron Stack (Machine Man, who provides comic relief, somewhat as he did in Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.: The Complete Collection) and Sleepwalker. The OLS team goes up against Puppet Master, who's been selling people he's enslaved, including a few superheroes.21-24 Ms. Marvel fights some more Brood on Monster Island. Cru helps, sort of.More action-packed fight scenes as Carol tries to figure out why she does what she does.

This series started off promisingly enough. There are very few Marvel titles featuring female lead characters, and this was a welcome addition to the line. Volumes One and Two worked well, as Ms Marvel confronted Rogue, and the OTHER Spider-Woman (you know, the one with the Black and White costume? Cool!). Volume Two also benefited from a plot stuctrue generated by it being a Civil War crossover.Volume three seemed like a bad bump in the road. Ms Marvel's personal problems and dating life started to read like cliché, and were dragging on and on. An absolutely ridiculous story about MODOK and AIM were, I hoped, just an unfortunate episode.Then comes this volume, in which all the disturbing trends of the past 20 issues come to the fore: silly romantic/personal life whining, absurd and confusing nonsense about her powers fluctuating, a completely lackluster supporting cast of allies, and a laugh-inducing villain: the return of The Brood. (Remember when Chris Claremont could make The Brood genuinely scary back in the 80's-90's with the X-men? Yeah, not so much here.)The reader just can't take the challenges here seriously, whether they be Ms Marvel's personal ones, the professional ones posed by her association with SHEILD and Tony Stark, or those posed by the super villains she battles. It all seems goofy, contrived, cheesy, and simple-minded.The artwork is certainly effective, although nothing to get excited about.I'm still planning on sticking with this series a while longer, but I can't shake the feeling that this title wouldn't last a second if the lead character weren't a scantily clad and curvaceous young woman.

This volume contains the Puppet Master mind control issues.Ms Marvel rarely looked better.It has very nice art overall.

We get seven issues and two stories.First up is the three-part story Puppets. Puppets does some nice things. It really strengthens Operation Lightning Storm by introducing Robotman and the the giant stalking character of the Sleepwalker. They (particularly Machine Man) have a solid time. With Miss Marvel, we get to see the level of concern to Anya. The Puppet Master makes a sick villain.The four-part "Monster and the Marvel" story finds Carol dragged off by the Cru to Monster Island as Carol retained a part of the Cru which explains her high healing factor. However, their powers are turned off and they find the Brood are on the island. This is a decent action story with a lot of madacap moments.Overall, this is the best Miss Marvel so far with two strong stories that provide some key insight into Carol's character.

Brian Reed's Ms. Marvel got off to a good start, and really started hitting its stride in the previous volume. With a firm grasp on Carol's character and her solid supporting cast, Monster Smash is a great conclusion to Brian Reed's first story arc, resolving (nearly) all the plots begun in the previous volumes.Operation Lightning Storm continues to take on big threats before they get `too big', and after duking it out with A.I.M. and M.O.D.O.K., Carol and her team head to South America to take on Puppet Master, a long running Fantastic Four villain. Without spoiling, let me just say that Carol's darker streak, established back in v.2, continues to develop here, and we get some hints to this as well (you can take the woman out of the army, but you can't take the army out of the woman). Later, the Brood return to take over Earth (seems every other alien race wants to do this), and Cru (from v.1) is also not far behind. The Cru character is really fleshed out here, providing all the answers readers have had since the debut. Reed's writing of the Brood is better this time, and he's not afraid to dive full on into the Brood's obvious inspiration and toss in a fun reference.Art here is handled by Aaron Lopresti, who came in during the previous volume. His art is clear, detailed and very nice, with only a couple of weird shots that are only noticeable upon closer inspection. His style isn't as dark as De La Torre's outings, but is not cartoon-y either, and it never clashed with the tone of the book, which occurred during Mike Wieringo's brief outing back in v.2.For people who do not want to get `too deep' into this run, this is a great place to cap your run with Carol Danvers. As mentioned, nearly all the plot points begun in the previous 3 volumes are resolved in this volume, and the end sets up new things for Carol to deal with as it leads into the big `Secret Invasion' of the Skrulls.
